Floating is far from a new trend. It’s been around since the 1950s and has proven popular throughout the world. It all started in 1954 when a neuroscientist named John C. Lilly created a stimuli-free environment in order to have a control group for his various experiments. Along the way, he created the world’s first float tank and discovered some of the numerous health benefits of sensory deprivation. Float tanks have since evolved over the years from metal tanks to fiberglass pods to spacious float rooms such as our state-of-the-art Ocean Float Room™.
In the absence of sensory stimulation and stress, your brain is able to rest and awaken its creative right hemisphere. Your body in turn lowers its levels of cortisol, the “stress hormone,” while releasing elevated levels of dopamine and endorphins, a.k.a. the “feel good” hormones.
Without the pulling force of gravity, your body is more free to relax. When your body doesn’t have to worry about tasks such as standing, walking, sitting or lifting, it can focus more on deep healing and recovery.
When deep rest and relaxation is achieved, your brain transitions from producing Beta (awake, normal, alert consciousness) and Alpha (relaxed, calm, lucid) waves to producing Theta (deep relaxation and meditation) waves. During this “Theta” state of very deep relaxation (which occurs during REM sleep), brain waves are slowed down to a frequency of 4-7 cycles per second. People with years of experience meditating have meditated consecutively for hours in order to achieve the same state of deep relaxation that can be reached during a one hour float session.

Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate USP)
The pharmaceutical grade Epsom salt in our float rooms is made up of the chemical compound magnesium sulfate and is renowned for its therapeutic and healing properties as a natural anti-inflammatory.
Magnesium is a mineral nutrient required by the body to regulate more than 300 enzymes and is vital in organizing many bodily functions, including muscle control, energy production, and the elimination of harmful toxins. Magnesium also plays an important role in the release and uptake of serotonin, a mood elevating chemical in the brain, which promotes a feeling of well being and relaxation while reducing anxiety, irritability, insomnia and abnormal heart rhythms. Sulfate plays a key role in the formation of brain tissue and improves the body’s absorption of nutrients. It also helps in eliminating toxins from the body and can assist in resolving headaches.
Many of us are nutritionally deficient in magnesium sulfate with decreasing levels around the world. The depletion of minerals from agricultural over development, the consumption of overly processed foods, and the overuse of prescription drugs are some of the reasons driving the depletion of magnesium sulfate in our bodies. Magnesium deficiencies around the world have contributed to the growth of heart disease, stroke, arthritis, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue syndrome and digestive disorders.
The good news is that magnesium sulfate is easily absorbed through the skin where it heads straight to work in your body. With over a thousand pounds of pharmaceutical grade Epsom salt in each of our float rooms, floating is an easy and effective way to boost your internal magnesium sulfate levels and improve your overall health and well being.
